OverviewThe High Falls District is an historic area just north of downtown, the site of much of Rochester’s industrial development and an area that officials have targeted for revitalization. The housing includes lofts and apartments such as The Mills at High Falls. The area, naturally, overlooks the High Falls, one of three waterfalls of the Genesee River in Rochester, and includes the Pont de Rennes Bridge, a pedestrian bridge that offers stunning views of the High Falls. Brown’s Race, which diverts water from the falls and once was used to power flour mills and various industries, now is used to generate hydroelectric power. The district has a visitor center and gift shop. High Falls is across State Street from Frontier Field, home of the Rochester Red Wings baseball team, and is close enough to walk to downtown. There are a few small shops and restaurants in the district, but the Center at High Falls, which once included several once-popular nightclubs, is mostly quiet now.
Local Museums & Landmarks
The area is chock-full of Rochester history, some of which is explained at the High Falls Visitor Center. The Pont de Rennes Bridge, which spans the Genesee River, offers fantastic views of the High Falls. Sam Patch, a well-known daredevil from the 19th century, died after jumping the High Falls in 1829.
