Strong / Mt. Hope Neighborhood - Rochester, NY

Overview

The Strong-Mount Hope neighborhood is close to Strong Memorial Hospital and Monroe Community Hospital and is popular with University of Rochester staff, faculty and students. The area is sometimes called the “white coat neighborhood” because of the many medical professionals who live here. There are many shops, stores, restaurants and bars in this neighborhood, which is about halfway between downtown Rochester and the bustling Jefferson Road shopping area in Henrietta. The neighborhood organization is quite active. The historic Mt. Hope Cemetery, the first municipal rural cemetery in the country, is here.

Essentials

Plenty of stores, pharmacies, diners, restaurants, bars and pizza shops are in Upper Mount Hope, as well as salons and auto repair shops. The closest library is the Highland branch, at 971 South Ave. The UR campus has public post offices. Mt. Hope Avenue had one of the last-remaining Wegmans supermarkets in the city; since that store closed, the closest ones are in nearby Henrietta. There’s also a Top’s supermarket on South Clinton Avenue in Brighton.

Recreation & Entertainment

Residents here are close enough to walk to events held at UR. Popular bars like The Distillery and the Elmwood Inn are on Mount Hope, across from Mt. Hope Cemetery. The cemetery itself is very picturesque and historic, and people often go there to hike, take tours or even picnic.

Transportation & Traffic

Mount Hope Avenue, the main thoroughfare in this neighborhood, is usually very busy with traffic, even moreso as you head toward Henrietta. Routes 390 and 590, both of which head north-south, are easy to reach.

Pros & Cons

Those who work at the University of Rochester – the largest employer in the region, now that Eastman Kodak Co. has shrunk – will enjoy the short commute from Upper Mount Hope. This area has many professionals and college students and offers a wide variety of places to shop and eat. The annual Lilac Festival makes traffic in this well-traveled area even more intense.
