Overview

North Tonawanda is one of three cities in Niagara County (Niagara Falls and Lockport are the others). North Tonawanda is at the south end of central Niagara County, virtually surrounded to the north and much of the east by the town of Wheatfield; to the east is Pendleton in Niagara County and Amherst in Erie County; to the south is the Erie Canal and beyond that the city of Tonawanda and town of Amherst (and beyond them, the major city of Buffalo).


Essentials

Again, there are plenty of places to shop and dine within a short drive. For grocery shopping, Wegmans has supermarkets in Amherst, about 3 miles east of North Tonawanda, and on Military Road in Niagara Falls, about 8 miles northwest. Tops Friendly Markets has a grocery store on Meadow Drive in North Tonawanda and three more stores in Amherst. Well-traveled Niagara Falls Boulevard has dozens of stores, including a Walmart Supercenter. North Tonawanda has plazas with stores like Dollar General and Walgreens and factory outlets. Target has a store on Transit Road in Amherst (about 12 miles east of North Tonawanda). Niagara Falls has a Home Depot and a Fashion Outlet Mall. Eastern Hills Mall in Williamsville, Erie County, is about 12 miles southeast.



Recreation & Entertainment

North Tonawanda has attractions like the historic Riviera Theatre, which hosts theater productions, concerts, movies and other events, and the Carnegie Art Center, which is in the former Carnegie Library. The Ghostlight Theater is a community theater that holds theatrical productions in an old church. The Herschell Carousel Factory Museum attracts visitors from throughout the region. Gateway Harbor is the western gateway to the Erie Canal between North Tonawanda and Tonawanda where you’ll find the arts, restaurants and live music. North Tonawanda’s parks hold outdoor concerts and annual events like the Canal Fest. The North Tonawanda Botanical Gardens are located on Sweeney Street. Adventure Landing on Niagara Falls Boulevard has a go-kart track and bumper boats.



Transportation & Traffic

Route 62 (Niagara Falls Boulevard), Route 425 and Route 429 run through North Tonawanda. Interstate 290 is just south of the city and Interstate 190 is just west. The Erie Canal runs through North Tonawanda, and the Niagara River is on the western edge.



Pros & Cons

There are plenty of things to do and see in North Tonawanda, which is located between the even-busier Niagara Falls and Buffalo. North Tonawanda is the second-largest city in Niagara County with lots of history and cultural attractions.
