OverviewRomulus is a town in central Seneca County, bordered to the north by Varick, to the east by Cayuga Lake (and beyond that, the town of Aurora in Cayuga County), to the south by Ovid, and to the west by Seneca Lake (and beyond that, the town of Benton in Yates County). Romulus is home to Sampson State Park and to the former Seneca Army Depot, which is being converted to other uses. The town also is home to Five Points Correctional Facility, a state prison, and the Willard Drug Treatment Center, a former state mental hospital. Romulus is in the heart of the Finger Lakes region, with two of the largest Finger Lakes on its west and east sides. Consequently, boating, fishing and other water activity is big here, along with camping and other outdoor activities. The area is largely rural. An unusual attraction in Romulus is the white deer that roam the former army depot grounds. Local Museums/Landmarks Romulus has a newly created historical society which has its headquarters at the Willard treatment center. The Sampson Navy Memorial Museum is at Sampson State Park, which is on land that was used as a Naval Base during World War II and an Air Force Base during the Korean War. The best known attraction here is the former Seneca Army Depot, which was built during World War II and in use until the 1990s. The depot was a major employer for the area and is being converted to other uses. Nearby Seneca Falls has a number of historic sites, and Waterloo is home to the National Memorial Day Museum. |
