Overview Stockton is a town in central Chautauqua County, bordered to the north by Pomfret and a small bit of Portland, to the east by Charlotte and Gerry, to the south by Ellery and to the west by the town of Chautauqua. The village of Cassadaga is in the northeast part of Stockton, and the town also contains several hamlets. Lily Dale, a well-known spiritualist community, is within the town of Stockton. At the northern end of neighboring Pomfret is the village of Fredonia, which is home to the State University of New York at Fredonia (also known as SUNY Fredonia). Within the town of Portland is the village of Brocton. This is a largely rural area with several bodies of water, and Cassadaga Lakes and Cassadaga Creek are both popular fishing areas. Local Museums & Landmarks Lily Dale Assembly Museum, billed as the “World’s Largest Center for the Science, Philosophy and Religion of Spiritualism,” is nestled beside Cassadaga Lake in Stockton. The assembly has classes open to the public and the museum is in a former one-room school house. Nearby Chautauqua has lots of attractions, starting with the world-renowned Chautauqua Institution. Fredonia also has several places to see, including the Rockefeller Arts Center and the Fredonia Opera House.

Essentials Stockton has a few small businesses, like a pizza shop, an ice cream shop and a small Shur Fine grocery, but most residents here handle their shopping needs in nearby communities. For groceries, Pomfret and Fredonia have a Walmart Supercenter, a Country Fair store and the Fredonia Deli and Food Mart. Dunkirk, just north of Fredonia, has a Tops Friendly Markets store, an Aldi’s store, P & G Foods and more. For retail shopping, Fredonia’s Walmart Supercenter is the big draw and located on Bennett Road; Fredonia also has a Sears Hometown Store on Main Street and others. Dunkirk has a wide variety of stores, including JC Penney, Big Lots, Peebles, Home Depot and more. The Cassadaga Valley Central School District is for residents of Stockton. The district has one elementary school and one middle-high school. The local library is the Mary E. Seymour Memorial Library on Maple Avenue in Cassadaga. The closest hospital is Brooks Memorial in Dunkirk.
