Welcome to Alexander, NY

Overview

The town of Alexander is on the southern border of Genesee County, east of Darien and west of Bethany, with Pembroke to the north and Wyoming County to the south. Alexander includes the village of Alexander and part of the village of Attica (the rest is in the town of Attica in Wyoming County). Alexander is known for its cobblestone buildings, with the only three-story cobblestone structure in North America built for educational purposes and the only known cobblestone building used as a Town Hall.

Essentials

Alexander has a variety of small businesses, such as a bank, an appliance store, and pizza and sub shops. For more shopping, Batavia is a quick, 8-mile drive northeast and Attica is only 3 miles south. Batavia has a wide variety of retailers, such as Walmart, KMart, Target and Sears, and grocery stores such as Top’s Friendly Markets. Attica also has a Top’s, as well as dollar stores and a pharmacy.

Recreation & Entertainment

Along with fishing, hunting and other outdoor activities, one of the biggest attractions in Alexander is the Western New York Gas and Steam Engine Association’s annual show, which includes demonstration of antique engines and equipment, log-sawing, tractor pulls and live entertainment. Architectural buffs will enjoy checking out the town’s historic cobblestone buildings.

Transportation & Traffic

Route 20 runs east and west through Alexander, and Route 98 heads north and south though town. The Thruway is a few miles north.

Pros & Cons

Historic architecture and small-town country living are the draws here. Alexander’s location also is a plus: You’re just minutes from some of the biggest attractions in Genesee County, including Darien Lake Theme Park, Batavia Downs Casino and Racetrack, and, in Attica, the annual rodeo.
