Overview

Centrally located in Genesee County, the city of Batavia is part of the town of Batavia, and, as the county seat, the center of government and commerce. Batavia is the only city in the county and the most populated municipality, with more than 15,000 residents. Here, you’ll find Batavia Downs, a racetrack with a casino, and the Batavia Muckdogs, a professional baseball team with a long history. Plenty of restaurants and shopping are available, with stores like Walmart, Kmart, Target and J.C. Penney located here. Customers come from miles away to shop at Oliver’s Candies, at 211 W. Main St.

Essentials

Batavia has several shopping centers, with stores like Kmart, Sears and BJ’s Wholesale Club on Lewiston Road, a Walmart Supercenter and a Target on Veterans Memorial Drive and a J.C. Penney store at Batavia City Centre, a downtown mall. For grocery shopping, Batavia has Top’s Friendly Market and Aldi’s on West Main Street and Sav-a-Lot on Ellicott Street.

Recreation & Entertainment

Plenty of activities and experiences are found here. Gamblers from all over flock to Batavia Downs Casino & Racetrack, which bills itself as America’s Oldest Lighted Harness Track. The casino has hundreds of slot machines and is expanding. Batavia has several fine golf courses, including Terry Hills Golf Course, which is consistently ranked among the five best public courses in western New York, and the Batavia Country Club. The Batavia Muckdogs are a professional baseball team that plays at Dwyer Stadium from June through September.

Transportation & Traffic

As the virtual center of Genesee County, many highways run through Batavia. The center of the city is at Route 5 and Route 33. Route 63 and Route 98 also run through Batavia, and the Thruway is just north of the city, with a Batavia exit.

Pros & Cons

This small community has a lot to offer – a small-town feel with lots of bigger-city activities. Its central location makes it easy to get to. Batavia is pretty much halfway from Rochester to Buffalo. The casino/race track and baseball team draw people from all over.
