Welcome to LeRoy, NY

Overview

The town of LeRoy, which includes the village of LeRoy, is on the eastern edge of Genesee County, bordering Monroe and Livingston counties to the east. LeRoy is best known as “The birthplace of Jell-O,” and a museum devoted to the jiggly dessert is here. Oatka Creek flows northward through the town and was a source of water power for early mills and is now popular for trout fishing. A man-made dam and LeRoy Falls, a natural waterfall, are the centerpieces of LeRoy. The village has tree-lined streets and Victorian architecture and is just minutes away from the Genesee Country Village and Museum, a 19th century “living history museum.”

Essentials

LeRoy has several restaurants and shops; for more eateries and shopping, residents take a short 10-mile drive west to Batavia, where you’ll find a Walmart Supercenter, Kmart, Target, and other stores. A Top’s Friendly Markets supermarket is at 128 W. Main St. in LeRoy; the closest Wegmans is 18 miles north, in Brockport.

Recreation & Entertainment

The LeRoy Country Club has a beautiful 18-hole course for golfers. Oatka Creek is a great place for trout fishing. Along with the intriguing Jell-O Museum, LeRoy also has fascinating antique and craft shops. Limerock Speedway, just east of LeRoy, features midget-class car racing in the summer. Frost Ridge Campground holds an annual summer concert series, “Jam at the Ridge,” and the annual Oatka Festival in July includes a parade, music, food and crafts.

Transportation & Traffic

The well-traveled Route 5 is the main east-west road in LeRoy, and the north-south Route 19 goes through the middle of town. The Thruway and the western terminus of Interstate 490 are both a few miles north of LeRoy.

Pros & Cons

Small-town living, a picturesque village and the scenic Oatka Creek make this a great place to live. You’re only minutes from the busy city of Batavia and only a half-hour west of downtown Rochester. Proximity to the Thruway and I-490 are plusses.
