Overview Albion is a village that is part of the towns of Albion and Gaines, centrally located in Orleans County. It is the county seat and, with more than 6,000 residents, the most populated municipality in the county. The Erie Canal runs through the village, and there’s a canal side park here with boat docking and a great place to watch a lift bridge. The courthouse square is on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as the Main Street district. Albion has a golf course and two art galleries, specialty shopping that includes antique/collectible stores, farm markets and a “pony club” where youths can practice riding skills. Oak Orchard Marine Park, a hot spot for fishing and boating, is just north of Albion; the city of Batavia is just south of the village. There’s a branch of Genesee Community College in Albion. Agriculture is the main business here, particularly apples, beans and cabbages. The Albion Central School District serves residents who live here.
Local Museums & Landmarks
Albion has several entries on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Historic Courthouse Square, the North Main-Bank Streets Historic District, the William Barlow House and the post office. Albion has one of the most intact historic commercial corridors in New York, with buildings dating back to the 1820s. The Cobblestone Society Museum – the only one of its kind in the world – showcases the unique masonry construction method popular in the area. Mount Albion Cemetery includes the Soldiers and Sailors Monument with the names of more than 400 local Civil War casualties. |
