Welcome to Attica, NY

Overview

Best known for the prison of the same name, Attica is a town on the northern edge of Wyoming County, bordered to the north by Alexander, Genesee County; to the east by Middlebury; to the south by Orangeville; and to the west by Bennington. The town of Attica also includes part of the village of Attica (the rest is in Genesee County), as well as the hamlets of Attica Center and Vernal Corners.

Essentials

For grocery shopping, Attica has a Top’s Friendly Markets store on Prospect Street. Alexander, just a five-minute drive north, has the Molasses Hill Bulk Food Store. The bustling city of Batavia in Genesee County is only about a 15-minute drive northeast; there, you’ll find more grocery stores and retail shopping such as Kmart, Walmart, Target and Sears. For other shopping, Attica has a Rite Aid pharmacy and a dollar store.

Recreation & Entertainment

The Attica Rodeo is held every August at the rodeo grounds, and includes bull riding, calf roping, barrel racing and other events. Additional rodeo events are held all summer long. Bennington Lanes is an eight-lane bowling center in Attica which also has a restaurant and bar. Attica has two golf courses: the Attica Golf Club, on Brunnell Street, and Quiet Times Golf Course, on Stedman Road. Darien Lake Theme Park, the largest amusement park in New York state, is only eight miles northwest of Attica. Hidden Valley Animal Adventure, a “wild-game safari park,” is a popular attraction just eight miles south, in Varysburg.

Transportation & Traffic

Attica is at the junction of Route 98, Route 354 and Route 238, making travel to and from the town easy.

Pros & Cons

The rodeo is a fun attraction and the proximity to Batavia is a plus. Attica still has a rural, agricultural feel with historic buildings. The prison is a major employer and an infamous attraction, but some people might be uncomfortable living near a maximum-security prison.
