Overview The town of Covington is in northeast Wyoming County, bordered to the north by Pavilion in Genesee County; to the east by York, Livingston County; to the south by Perry; and to the west by Middlebury. Covington, which has only about 1,250 residents, includes the hamlets of Covington, LaGrange, Pearl Creek, Peoria, and Spragues Corners. Dairy farming is the predominant business in this mainly residential and agricultural community, along with some wheat and corn farming. Covington also is home to a few small businesses, including a tool and die business, a used auto parts company and a trucking company. The town was named after General Leonard Covington, who served in the Northwest Indian War. The Oatka Creek flows through the Wyoming Valley in the town, which is otherwise landlocked. Local Museums/Landmarks Letchworth State Park, the biggest attraction in Wyoming County, is about 19 miles away at both the Castile entrance and the Mt. Morris entrance (in Livingston County).

Essentials For grocery shopping, the closest supermarket is 10 miles south in Perry, where the Perry Food Market-IGA is at 121 N. Center St. A smaller food store, Dourie’s Shop Wise, is 5 miles west in the town of Wyoming. Wegmans and Top’s Friendly Markets stores are in Geneseo, about 13 miles east, and a Top’s, Save-a-Lot and Lantz’s Bulk Foods are in Warsaw, 14 miles southwest of Covington. The Wyoming Free Library serves most residents in Covington, although the Perry Public Library serves a small portion of the southernmost part of town. Wyoming County Community Hospital in Warsaw is the regional hospital throughout the county. Students attend one of three school districts, depending on where they live: the Pavilion Central School District, the Perry Central School District, or the Wyoming Central School District.

Pros & Cons If you like small-town living with wide-open spaces and plenty of picturesque farmland, Covington will be to your liking. Route 63, a major nearby highway, has seen dramatic and significant increases in truck traffic since the passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement, and the state Department of Transportation has been studying travel on the corridor.
