Overview The town of Middlebury is on the northern border of Wyoming County and includes the village of Wyoming and several small hamlets. Middlebury is bordered to the north by Genesee County; to the east by Covington and Perry; to the south by Warsaw; and to the west by Attica. The village of Wyoming is one of the earliest places where natural gas was developed and gas still powers village streetlights and some homes. The downtown historic district is called “Gaslight Village,” and offers boutique shopping in quaint shops. The popular AppleUmpkin Festival is held annually in September in the village of Wyoming. Local Museums/Landmarks The village of Wyoming has more than 70 homes on the National Register of Historic Places and the downtown area is lit by gas lights. Middlebury Academy was built in 1817 and is said to be the oldest institution of higher education west of the Genesee River in New York state. The building is still open and maintained by the Middlebury Historical Society. The Bryant Fleming House is one of the homes on the national register. The Hillside Inn is a former bed and breakfast that was built in the 1850s and used to be a spa with mineral springs

Essentials For grocery shopping, Top’s Friendly Markets stores can be found just west of Middlebury in Attica and just south, in Warsaw. The village of Wyoming has a smaller grocery store, Dourie’s Shop Wise, and Warsaw also has Save-a-Lot and Lantz’s Bulk Foods. Wyoming’s “Gaslight Village” has plenty of boutique shopping. For retail, residents head to Walmart in Warsaw or, a bit further north, to Batavia, which has Target, Sears, J.C. Penney and Walmart. Wyoming County Community Hospital in Warsaw is the regional hospital. The Wyoming Central School District serves residents who live here. The Wyoming Free Library, on South Academy Street, is the local library.
