Welcome to Sheldon, NY

Sheldon is a town on the west border of Wyoming County, bordered to the north by Bennington, to the east by Orangeville, to the south by Java and to the west by Erie County. The town includes 10 hamlets, the best known of them Sheldon Center, Strykersville and Varysburg. Cayuga Creek flows through the east part of town and Buffalo Creek flows through the southwest part. Essentials

For grocery shopping, residents here take a quick 10 mile drive west to East Aurora, where there’s a Top’s Friendly Markets supermarket. Other Top’s stores are in Attica (16 miles northeast) and in Warsaw (about 18 miles east.) For retail shopping, East Aurora has a Sears and the charming Vidler’s 5 and 10 store. The closest Walmart is in Warsaw.

Recreation & Entertainment

Hidden Valley Animal Adventure, a family-run “safari” park where visitors take trolley rides and interact with more than 30 different species of animals, is in Varysburg. The complex includes The Lodge at Hidden Valley, which offers fine dining, and the Trailside Grill, which is more of a family restaurant. Also in Varysburg is Byrncliff Resort and Conference Center, a year-round resort with an 18-hole golf course, overnight lodging, cross-country ski trails, an outdoor pool, a miniature golf course, and live entertainment. Varysburg also is the site of the annual “Jam in the Valley,” a two-day country music festival held each summer.

Transportation & Traffic

Route 20A, heading east-west, passes through the north part of town. Route 77 cuts through the heart of Sheldon, and Route 78 is on the western edge of town.

Pros & Cons

Sheldon has a few interesting attractions and is close to East Aurora, which has several historical attractions. The two creeks in town offer good fishing. Proximity to Darien Lake and to Erie County is a plus.
